Cottage Life writer wins science award

by penny on May 28, 2009

Longtime Cottage Life writer Ray Ford will be interviewed today on Points North, CBC Radio’s afternoon show in Sudbury. But despite the spring temperatures, he’ll be talking about winter. Ray won an award from the Canadian Science Writers Association for “Rocket Science,” a story about the physics behind one of our favourite winter cottaging sports: sledding, which appeared in Cottage Life’s Winter ’08 issue. He’ll be on the radio around 4:10. If you want to listen, you can do so through the CBC internet feed.

The awards ceremony was in Suds last weekend and Ray, who lives near North Bay, was there to pick up his prize. He’s no stranger to the awards podium, having won numerous nominations and awards for Cottage Life over the many years he’s been writing for us.

Kudos also to another Cottage Life contributor, Kim Pittaway who, along with her sister, Tina Pittaway, won the Science Writers Award for best radio documentary for their program on water use and abuse, “Tina and Kim’s Watery Road to Hell.” It aired on CBC Radio’s The Current last December.

Springtime is awards season in the Canadian magazine industry, with the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors and the National Magazine Awards Foundation both doling out their annual honours next week. Ray and Kim are on the nominations list, natch, along with a number of other Cottage Life and explore contributors. We’ll keep you posted.
